First Community Outreach Under The Optometric Service And Community Outreach

Body

The School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Cape Coast has successfully undertaken its first community outreach under the Optometric Service and Community Outreach for Practical Experience (OPTO-SCOPE) project. The exercise was held on 25th February 2026 at the Kakumdo and Bremang CHPS facilities in the Central Region.

The project, funded by Optometry Giving Sight, is designed to expand access to quality eye care services in underserved communities while enhancing practical clinical training for final-year Doctor of Optometry students. Ten students, supervised by two faculty members, were deployed to these communities to provide comprehensive eye care.

During the outreach, 107 residents received eye health education, vision assessments, refraction, spectacles, and treatment for various eye conditions. The initiative has already demonstrated significant impact in improving access to eye care while offering meaningful clinical exposure for students.

The OPTO-SCOPE project will continue over the next eight months, with further outreach activities planned to reach more individuals and strengthen community eye health
