Inauguration of the Eye and Vision Research Centre (EVRC) and Launch of the Vision Science Africa Exchange (ViSAX-25)

Body

The School of Optometry and Vision Science (SOVS) at the University of Cape Coast has achieved a historic milestone with the inauguration of the Eye and Vision Research Centre (EVRC) and the official launch of the Vision Science Africa Exchange (ViSAX-25). The event brought together University Management, distinguished guests, international collaborators, faculty, students, and partners.

A New Hub for Vision Research

The EVRC, the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa, is designed to serve as the hub for inquiry, discovery, and innovation in vision science. The Centre is strategically located in the Science Annex Building and already houses two pioneering laboratories:

  • Diagnostic and Visual Function Research Laboratory (DiVFuR), focused on electrophysiology and psychophysics, established through the generous support of Velux Stiftung.
  • Ocular Imaging and Assessment Laboratory, created through Internally Generated Funds (IGF) of SOVS and the University, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to investing in its own future.

These laboratories provide advanced imaging and diagnostic tools to support clinical training, postgraduate research, and innovation in eye care.

The Centre is envisioned as the research backbone of SOVS, connecting its three academic departments: Vision Science, Ophthalmic Science, and Optometric Science with its coordinating units: the Eye and Vision Research Coordinating Unit, the Clinical Training and Services Unit, and the Service and Community Outreach for Practical Experience (SCOPE) Unit.

Through the SOVS 25*25 Legacy Project, plans are already underway to expand the EVRC with additional specialty laboratories and clinics, including Low Vision, Contact Lens, Myopia, Additional Ocular Disease Diagnostics, Practice Lanes, and a Modern Dispensing Laboratory.

Launch of ViSAX-25

The inauguration also witnessed the launch of the Vision Science Africa Exchange (ViSAX-25), a maiden workshop that brings together young researchers from Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, and beyond, in collaboration with the University of Freiburg, Germany. ViSAX-25 is designed to train, mentor, and inspire the next generation of African vision scientists, while deepening international partnerships and strengthening Africa’s capacity in clinical and experimental vision research.

Speeches and Highlights

  • Prof. Stephen Ocansey, Dean of SOVS, in his welcome address, described the EVRC as more than just laboratories. it is a symbol of SOVS’ transformation from a department into a fully-fledged School. He emphasized the Centre’s role in connecting research, clinical training, and community outreach, while urging faculty and students to take full advantage of the opportunities it presents.
  • Prof. Denis Aheto, Pro Vice-Chancellor, who chaired the function, commended the School and its partners for their collaborative efforts. He noted that “these milestones not only celebrate the growth of SOVS but also showcase the University’s enduring commitment to research excellence, innovation, and international collaboration.” He further stressed that EVRC and ViSAX are aligned with UCC’s Corporate Strategic Plan (CSP 2023–2027), particularly in building resilient teaching and learning culture, enhancing international visibility, and promoting responsible research.
  • Dr. Heiko Philippin, Glaucoma Specialist at the University Hospitals Freiburg, delivered a keynote on “Translating Vision Research in a Regional Context.” He cautioned against the dangers of untreated glaucoma, urging Ghanaians to prioritize eye health through regular check-ups.

Tributes were also paid to Professor Emeritus V.P.Y. Gadzekpo, whose leadership paved the way for the establishment of Optometry at UCC, as well as to former Heads of Optometry whose foresight laid the foundation for today’s achievements. Professor Alex Ilechi, Dr. Enyam Morny, Dr. Dillys Amega.

Special recognition was given to Prof. Sven Heinrich of the University of Freiburg, whose continuous support has been instrumental in building UCC’s international collaborations in vision science.

Looking Ahead

The inauguration concluded with a guided tour of the EVRC, where dignitaries and participants expressed admiration for the cutting-edge infrastructure. The Centre is expected to significantly enhance optometry practice, postgraduate training, and Africa’s visibility in global vision science research.

Conclusion

The inauguration of the EVRC and the launch of ViSAX-25 mark a new chapter in the growth of the School of Optometry and Vision Science at UCC. Together, these initiatives represent a bold step towards making UCC a continental hub of vision science serving Ghana, Africa, and the wider world.
